How to Remove Red Wine Stains from Carpet: The Definitive Guide

Red wine on the carpet — every host's nightmare. Here's exactly what to do in the first 60 seconds, what products actually work, and when to call a professional stain removal specialist.

Red wine is one of the most common carpet stain emergencies we deal with at Gold Standard Cleaning. It's also one of the most mishandled — because the instinct to grab whatever cleaning product is nearest and scrub hard is exactly the wrong approach.

Here's the definitive guide to red wine stain removal, from the team that handles stain emergencies across Maldon, Essex and Suffolk every week.

The First 60 Seconds Are Everything

Speed is the single most important factor in red wine stain removal. The moment wine hits carpet, it begins to penetrate the fibres and bond with them. The longer it sits, the harder it becomes to remove.

Grab a clean white cloth or paper towels immediately. Press firmly onto the stain — don't rub — and blot from the outside edge inward. This prevents the stain from spreading. Keep blotting with fresh sections of cloth until you've absorbed as much liquid as possible. You may be surprised how much wine you can remove in this first step alone.

What Actually Works

Once you've blotted up the excess, the goal is to break down the remaining wine before it sets. Here are the methods that genuinely work:

*Cold water and salt:* Immediately after blotting, pour a small amount of cold water onto the stain to dilute it, then blot again. Sprinkle table salt generously over the damp area — salt draws moisture and wine out of the fibres. Leave for a few minutes, then vacuum up the salt and blot again.

*Washing-up liquid and hydrogen peroxide:* Mix one part washing-up liquid with two parts 3% hydrogen peroxide. Apply to the stain, leave for 20 minutes, then blot and rinse with cold water. This works well on light-coloured carpets but test on a hidden area first — hydrogen peroxide can lighten some carpet colours.

*Club soda:* The carbonation in club soda helps lift wine from fibres. Pour a small amount directly onto the stain, allow it to fizz, then blot firmly. Repeat until the stain fades.

What Doesn't Work (And Makes It Worse)

Hot water sets red wine stains permanently — never use hot water. Rubbing spreads the stain and pushes it deeper into the pile. White wine does not neutralise red wine — this is a myth. Bleach will remove the stain but also the carpet colour.

When the Stain Has Already Dried

Dried red wine stains are significantly harder to remove but not impossible. Rehydrate the stain with a small amount of cold water first, then apply an enzyme-based stain remover. Allow it to dwell for the time specified on the product, then blot and extract. Multiple treatments may be needed.

For dried or stubborn red wine stains that home methods haven't shifted, professional stain removal is the answer. Our specialist oxidising agents and hot water extraction equipment can remove or significantly reduce stains that consumer products can't touch.
